Springfield, MO - After a year of closure, the Midtown Carnegie Branch Library will reopen at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, June 9, 2025. The library was closed for renovations that included a new entrance with ramps for improved accessibility, a repaired elevator, a new HVAC system and new water pipes installed in the building.
Executive Director Ed Walton said, “I join our staff in being very excited about reopening the Midtown Carnegie Branch Library. Midtown is the historic gem of the Springfield-Greene County Library District, providing library services to residents of Springfield. We hope the upgrades in accessibility, heating and air conditioning will meet your expectations. The Midtown staff eagerly look forward to seeing familiar faces return to the library and welcoming new patrons to become the familiar faces of the future. We invite you to come and experience anew the historic Midtown Carnegie Branch Library!”
Built with money donated by businessman and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, the stately library opened in 1905 and is celebrating 120 years of service to the community. Carnegie donated $56 million to construct approximately 1700 libraries throughout the United States. Currently, only 800 are still used as public libraries. Of local interest, the clay tiles used in the new addition were manufactured by the same company that created the original 1905 roof tiles.
The Library opens as the Summer Reading program begins for both adults and children. To learn more about the Summer Reading Program, visit thelibrary.org/summerreading.
