The Basics of Grant Writing

Published October 24, 2019

Writing a grant proposal can seem like an overwhelming undertaking, but really it's all about the planning. There are literally thousands of resources available to help you through this process.

The Foundation Center offers a free online tutorial that helps you identify the key steps in getting started with your grant proposal. The Foundation Center also offers free access to Grant Space information and resources that are specifically designed to meet the needs of nonprofits worldwide in need of know-how for securing funding and operating effective organizations.

Applying for a federal grant can be a daunting task.  Make sure to review Grants.gov for requirements and eligibility.

Almost all grants will want you to provide an evaluation of your program and its benefits. How do you know if your program was successful? The Kellogg Foundation offers free access to their "Evaluation Handbook". This handbook provides a framework for thinking about evaluation as a relevant and useful program tool.
