Is your child learning to read? The library has resources for parents to use to help their little readers practice their newly acquired skills.

First early reader book series are available that work well with children who are just learning to read. These series include first sight words, rhyming words, large print and pictures on every page to support the text. The amount of text varies with each series and title. You'll find these series in the Early Reader section of the children’s department at each library branch. If titles are not available at your home branch, you can make a request with a librarian or online through COOLcat.

• Starfall is a free online website for learning to read and is used by many kindergarten classes throughout the country as part of their regular reading practice.

• Brightly is a website in partnership with Penguin Random House Publishers to help parents and educators find resources and tips on raising kids who love to read.

• Bob Books by Lynn Maslen Kertell-available on Hoopla

• First Class Phonics by P.S. Quick-available on Hoopla

The websites listed below offer free, printable emergent readers designed by teachers.

• Hubbard’s Cupboard, a free web site for early childhood educators and parents, offers printable booklets for emergent readers.

• The Measured Mom offers printable sight word readers.
