Activities for Preschoolers

ADVENTURE BEGINS AT YOUR LIBRARY

Summer Reading Program Activities

for Tiny Tots and Preschoolers Birth

Through Age 5

Reading, singing, playing and talking are fun activities to do with your little one that prepare them for learning to read. Feel free to repeat the activities and create your own — repetition is important for learning!

Take our Summer Reading Survey.

Especially for Infants to Toddlers

  • Sing to your infant or toddler.

  • Learn a rhyme and recite it to your child.

  • Enjoy book play with your baby; stack them, put them in and take them out of containers, and just explore how they look, feel and taste.

  • Put your baby in the stroller and go on a walk. Talk about things, people and animals you see. Act as a narrator during the walk.

  • Pause during your talk time and wait for baby to respond with a word, sound or movement.

  • Explore different sounds. Find items around the house to tap, shake and rattle.

  • Make a book of photographs or drawings of family members (don't forget pets!) and read it together.

  • Play with wooden blocks. Build towers together and let baby knock them down.

  • Hold a mirror in front of baby and talk about different parts of their face.

  • Listen to a long-distance relative read a story over video messaging.

  • Create a song routine when getting baby dressed, putting them in the car seat, bathing, etc.

For All Pre-readers

  • Play I-Spy with the alphabet when you're out running errands.

  • Put on some favorite music and have a sing-a-long.

  • Retell your little one’s favorite story without the book.

  • Make an “All About Me” book. Include photographs of all the special people in your little one’s life.

  • Make a “What I Can Do” chart to watch your little one grow. Encourage preschoolers to add new skills as they gain them!

  • Play together in the Play and Learn Center at your favorite library branch.

  • Create an obstacle course to complete with family members or friends.

  • Play dress up. See who can come up with the silliest outfit!

  • Build a reading fort!

  • Hunt for the first letter of your child’s name in books, on signs in the store and all around town: “Look, It’s a ‘T’ for “Teddy!”

  • Let your older baby or toddler explore finger paint. Those smears are her first attempts at writing!

  • Play which of these things is not like the other game.

  • Read a picture book featuring a character from another culture.

  • Check out a toy with your Library card at thelibrary.org/toys.

  • Play with a box! Turn it into a ship, a car, or a rocket, and go on an adventure!

  • Create your own activity!
