Summer Reading Program Activities for Kids

Adventure Begins at Your Library! Complete at least 8 activities—you can choose from our list or create your own! Feel free to repeat any of theses activities and adapt them to fit your needs.

Activities
  • Take a selfie in front of a mural around town.

  • Go for a walk to find objects for a "nature collage."

  • Pick three colors you might find in nature, then take a walk and try to find them.

  • Attend a library program.

  • What is your favorite color? Draw something using only shades of that color.

  • Look around you right now! How many different colors can you name?

  • Read a book with a color in the title.

  • Ask someone in your community what they like to read.

  • Check out a cookbook and choose a new recipe to prepare together.

  • Check out an Adventure Backpack and explore the outdoors with your family.

  • Use Your Next Read on the library website to get personalized book suggestions from your librarians.

  • Attend a Fantastic Friday event and learn something new about your community.

  • Draw a picture of one of your favorite memories.

  • Check out an audiobook or use one of the library apps (Hoopla or Libby) to read or listen to a book.

  • Read a book about a character who doesn't look like you or live like you.

  • Create a structure out of LEGOs or blocks and send a picture to imagine@thelibrary.org.

  • Try a new type of art. You might find an idea at one of the Library's programs this summer!

  • Make a list of places you'd like to visit. Use a library resource like a book or a database to research one of them.

  • Read a book about an artist or a type of art. Try some of the Library’s booklists to get some ideas!

  • Look for a rainbow, or create one of your own!

  • After reading a chapter book, draw a picture of how you think the main character looks.

  • Make a diorama for a book you have read.

  • Work with a friend to create a collaborative art piece.

  • Embrace your colorful side! Pick out an outfit with a variety of colors.

  • Ask a friend to take a creative photo of you reading a book. Send it to imagine@thelibrary.org.

  • Create your own!
