The Library's Literacy Program
What Happens Next?
Create stories, play make-believe and let your child be a storyteller.
PLAY
What Happens Next?
“Then what happened?” When kids ask that question, they are starting to realize that events in stories happen in sequence - first one thing happens, then another, then the next and so on. This skill of understanding sequence is important when children begin to learn to read. Talk about the sequences of everyday life – getting ready for bed, fixing a meal or your child’s routine at school. You can also talk about sequence in the books, stories and songs your child is familiar with and let them help you tell the stories, too.
SING
Five Little Ducks
Five little ducks went out one day, (hold up five fingers)
Over the hill and far away. (hide fingers behind back)
Mother Duck said, “Quack, quack, quack, quack,” (open and close hand like a duck bill)
But only four little ducks came back. (hold up four fingers)
Repeat until there are no more ducks and for the last line sing:
And all of her five little ducks came back!
