You can never have too many books. That's my personal motto and, certainly, it applies to the collection management staff at the Springfield-Greene County Library District.
With a half million books on the shelves of the nine branches, there's always room for more. And that's why Lisa Sampley, who coordinates collection purchases, is delighted when individuals or groups donate funds to buy books in specific subject areas. "These donations allow the collection staff to focus on a particular subject that I know patrons are interested in," she said.
Two consistent group donors are the Greene County Medical Alliance and the Springfield Ad Club.
Earlier in the year, Alliance member Gail Holand presented the District with a check for $1,973, which will be used to buy medical and health-related books. For the past eight years, the group has made the library the recipient of its annual fundraising campaign for an approximate total of $17,000.
Here are a few of the books bought from previous donations that are among the top ten checked-out items:
· "101 Reasons Why I'm a Vegetarian" by Pamela Rice;
· "The Doctor's Guide to Gastrointestinal Health" by Paul Miskovitz;
· "Homes That Heal and Those That Don't" by Athena Thompson;
· "The Thyroid Sourcebook for Women" by M. Sara Rosenthal;
· "The Top 100 Immunity Boosters" by Charlotte Haigh.
During the past few years with their donations, the members of the Springfield Ad Club have been helpful in keeping the library's collection of marketing materials up to date.
New titles include "Mobile Advertising: Supercharge Your Brand in the Exploding Wireless Market" by Chetan Sharma, Joe Herzog and Victor Melfi. The trio of authors makes the argument that communicating and marketing to the "connected" generation will be the next challenge: "With over one billion handsets sold worldwide every year and a mobile broadband network infrastructure that can transmit those ads, mobile is at a basic level, ready for prime-time advertising."
