EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
 

LOCATION: Springfield-Greene County Library District, Springfield, Missouri

SALARY: Commensurate with experience, (minimum $105,000 to start) with benefits

Job Description

Position: Executive Director

Salary Track: Z

NOTE: This is a general description of functions and responsibilities of the Executive Director. Because of the dynamic and expanding nature of this position within the district, this job description may not include all specific duties or responsibilities that will ultimately be performed by the person hired for this position.

Overview

Under the direction of the Library Board of Trustees, the Library Director is responsible for identifying, planning, organizing, executing and evaluating an effective program of library service to the citizens of Greene County.

Essential Functions

The Director shall:

  • Be the chief executive officer of the library district.
  • Be responsible for the execution of orders and policies adopted and promulgated by the Board of Trustees and those prescribed by Missouri State Statute.
  • Act as technical advisor to the Board; recommend needed policies for Board action.
  • Have complete authority to hire employees for all positions authorized by the Board and supervise their work.
  • Help to develop short-term and long-range plans relative to all areas of the system.
  • Provide expertise and direction in all areas, especially those including: finances, expansion, staff development, professional service and public relations.
  • Perform other duties as the Board may direct from time to time.

Education/Experience

  • MLS or MLIS from an ALA accredited institution.

  • Knowledge of and competencies working with technological advances in library services
  • Effective performance in supervision, training and communications (oral and written)
  • Effective performance in financial management, budget preparation and policy development
  • Strong interpersonal skills, sensitivity, leadership ability, honesty, integrity and good moral character
  • A vision of the future for library professionals and library systems.

Responsibilities

  • Directs and administers the library system and programs.
  • Establishes realistic goals and actively works to achieve them.
  • Studies the community’s needs and works to fulfill such needs.
  • Suggests and carries out plans for improving and extending library services.
  • Prepares regular reports embodying the library’s current progress and future needs; cooperates with the Board to plan and carry out the library program.
  • Maintains an active program of public relations.
  • Generates original and innovative thinking in formulating and executing library programs.
  • Plans, develops and implements records, report systems and schedules.
  • Prepares an annual budget for the library in consultation with the Board and gives a current account of expenditures against the budget at each meeting.
  • Attends all Board meetings other than those in which the director’s salary or tenure are under discussion.
  • Affiliates with the state and national professional organizations and attends professional meetings and workshops.
  • Uses the services and consultants of the state library.
  • Reports regularly to the Library Board, to officials of local government, and to the general public.
  • Knows local and state laws; actively supports appropriate library legislation in the state and nation and presents lobbying opportunities to the Board when applicable.

Contact

  • Regular, daily public contact and contact with all system departments.
  • Works closely with other branch personnel and branch managers.
  • Routine telephone contact with public and other departments and branches.
  • Participates in professional library organizations.

Supervision

  • Supervised by the Library Board of Trustees.

Working Environment

  • Primarily indoor with heating and cooling regulated in a general library environment.

Miscellaneous Requirements

  • Must be able to pass a security background check.
