American Legion Vietnam War Memorial, Post 639The American Legion Vietnam War Memorial Post 639 was chartered by a Vietnam veterans support group as an affiliate American Legion Post in May 1981.
The Post's current home was dedicated in July 1993 and is located on twenty-four acres immediately south of Nathanael Greene and Close Park's lake on South Scenic Avenue. Two static-mounted helicopters, a submarine conning tower and other memorials are on public display on the grounds.
Post 639 is open from 11:00AM until 11:00PM seven days a week. The Post has a full-service lounge and a tasty lunch is served from 11:00AM until 2:00PM Monday-Friday. The public is invited to come and visit for food or drink whenever the post is open.
The primary function of Post 639 is to assist and suppport all United States military veterans and their families. The Post participates in activities that support Mount Vernon Veterans Home, Veterans Day parade, Boys State, Springfield Public Schools' Project Graduation, and other activities that promote Americanism.
The Post is supported through fundraisers like bingo, which takes place every Friday at 6:30PM in the Bingo Hall at 2032 West Bennett Street, and donations. The net proceeds of fundraising activities go to support the post's veterans' activities.
