Why is Missouri called “The Cave State”?

According to an article in the September 1986 “Rural Missouri”, Missouri has some 4,769 recorded caves, more than any other state in the Union, and this figure grows about 150 every year as new caves are discovered. Less than half of these caves are mapped.

The Missouri Spelelological Society Survey (MSS), in conjunction with the U.S. Forest Service, Missouri Department of Conservation, Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the National Scenic Riverways is involved in mapping the caves.
